Pipe fitting basically involves setting up of (and repairing) tubing or piping systems which can be used to transfer various materials including liquids, gases, chemicals etc. Fittings allow the pipes to be joined and bent at appropriate places and can be used to close them wherever required.

Carbon steel pipe fittings are the most commonly used fittings in US. Although carbon steel pipe fittings are mainly used in the construction industry, they can also be used in various manufacturing as well as industrial devices. These also have a wide application in plumbing systems. There are different grades of carbon steel which are used in making these fittings for various purposes. Basically, carbon is alloyed with steel in different proportions to be used for different purposes. The lower the carbon content is in the steel, the higher it has the properties of iron. Adding higher quantities of carbon makes the steel harder and stronger but it also makes it more brittle and less easy to weld.

These fittings can be used to fit into other pipes using either threading or using the slip fit method. In the threading method the pipes basically are screwed together to be joined while in the slip fit method, the pipes are slipped into one another by using sleeves that ensure a good fit. Both the fit types have a further classification in the form of male and female. Male connectors are those which have either an external thread so that a pipe with a slightly larger diameter can be screwed on top of it or are the slightly smaller connectors which slip inside the larger one. Female connectors are those which either have an internal thread so that the slightly narrower male connector (or pipe) can be screwed inside it or are the slightly larger connectors which receive the narrower male connector within it.

Some factors which should be kept in consideration while selecting a particular type of pipe fitting are:

  1. There are different types of connectors which can be used to join pipes. There can be cases where one end of the pipe is threaded while the other end needs to be slip fitted or one end could be a male type connector while the other can be a female type connector. The different types of connectors should be taken into consideration while going in for the fittings.
  2. The material of the pipe fitting should ideally be of the same material the pipe itself but there could be some cases where other materials could also be used. In these cases the norms and standards should be considered while selecting the material of the connector.
  3. The pipe fittings should also be such that they don’t interrupt the smooth flow of the materials in the pipe. It is advisable to use a fitting that is slightly larger than the pipe so that it doesn’t narrow down the pipe’s internal diameter.
  4. There are different types of connectors for the different types of materials that they carry for e.g chemical, gases and other liquids will require different types of connectors to function optimally.
  5. The thickness of the fittings should also be considered.
  6. There are numerous sites which lets one properly search and decide on which type of Carbon steel pipe fittings best suits their needs. Shopping online for these can help you easily compare different suppliers as well as provide you all the knowledge that you need and you can do all this without leaving the comfort of your home/office while simultaneously saving on time and cost.
